Rohatsu Sesshin - seven-day Zen Retreat - with Subhana Barzaghi

Fri 03/12 Fri 10/12/10
Adekate, Dean
(between Ballarat & Daylesford)

Awake! Awake!
Traditionally December 8th is celebrated as the time of the Buddha’s awakening. We celebrate his awakening by dedicating ourselves to awakening our own heart-mind. It is all too easy to become cosy and complacent in your meditations, so I urge you to remember that this precious life is transient, all good things pass quickly away.

Subhana Barzaghi has been practising meditation for over 30 years. She has studied in Australia and Hawaii with Robert Aitken Roshi and John Tarrant Roshi in Japan with Yamada Koun Roshi, Subhana received Dharma transmission from Aitken Roshi and John Tarrant in 1996 at Kodoji Temple, Sydney Zen Centre Retreat Centre at St. Albans.

Sesshin means ‘to touch the mind, to settle the mind, to convey the mind’. Sesshin is a rare chance to experience seven days of silence and meditation in beautiful, bush surroundings, following traditional Zen retreat form. If you have been meditating for a while and feel ready to move into a deeper level of practice, sesshin opens the way -- the ancient Way of steeping yourself in silence, seated and walking meditation, silent work practice, walking and resting in great silence, with interviews with the teacher and Dharma talks to fire your practice. All meals are vegetarian, and part-time attendance is available.

Mindfulness, Insight & Awareness International teacher Rob Nairn

Friday Oct 29th Sunday Nov 28th

Our internal environment is dominated by unseen habitual patterns which obstruct growth & keep us trapped in egocentric grasping & the suffering that this causes. We will follow progressive stages of training beginning with thorough grounding in mindfulness; then insight training where we will explore the internal environment, learn to recognise subtle thought processes & identify subliminal reflex, the keys to freedom from habitual patterning. We will learn to experience ourselves directly instead of through ideas, & so cross the boundary between consciousness & awareness.

During the retreat there will be the opportunity to deepen awareness and understanding of the natural elements surrounding us and learn how we affect and are affected by the balance of elements externally, in ourselves and in others.

* Noble silence.

Wheel of Life Rob Nairn

FEBRUARY RETREAT - 2011

2011 Friday 4th February Sunday 27th February

The Buddha’s teachings on dependent origination form the hub from which most Dharma teachings arise.

The retreat will offer a combination of practical training in mindfulness, optional Ngondro instruction & practice, & lectures covering the twelve links of dependent origination.

There will be particular focus on the five skandhas, the eight consciousnesses, & the psychological mechanisms that cause contact to develop into grasping, involvement, & the perpetuation of samsaric existence & suffering.

Rob Nairn leads the Kagyu Centres in Africa, under the guidance of Akong Rinpoche. Rob is an internationally sought after presenter of meditation and Buddhism. He resigned as professor of criminology at the University of Cape Town in 1980 to pursue Buddhism full time. He has extensive experience in psychology, and has completed a 4-year meditation retreat. He is one of the pioneers in presenting Buddhist philosophy and practice in a way accessible to the western mind.

Rob is author of three books: Tranquil Mind Introduction to Buddhism and meditation; Diamond Mind Psychology of meditation; Living Dreaming Dying Wisdom of Tibetan psychology.

~ A Series of One-day Meditation Workshops ~
with
Ven. Pannyavaro (Pannya)

• September 26th - 2010
• November 28th - 2010
These Meditation Workshops are essentially instructional with the participants getting feedback on their practice from the teacher in a supportive environment.

During the day the basics of the practice of insight meditation (vipassana bhavana) in three areas: sitting, walking and in daily activities will be explained in detail.

Whether they are new to the practice or have had previous experience, the workshop participants can benefit by having the opportunity to work through with the teacher any problems, difficulties or need for clarification in their meditation practice.

Additionally, instructions on loving-kindness meditation (metta bhavana) will be given to support the practice of insight meditation.

Attention will be given on to how apply the knowledge of meditation techniques and strategies to both the intensive retreat practice situation and the ability to integrate the meditation into everyday life.

The outcome of the workshop should be that it gives the participants increased confidence and skill in their ability to self-manage and develop their meditation practice, particularly in applying the meditation skills to daily life.

No cost is involved although a donation to cover cost is appreciated.

Workshops are held on the last Sunday of the Month from 9 AM to 5 PM

Drop in Classes and Day Courses
Meditate in Adelaide, Australia

Website: www.meditateinadelaide.com.au/

Our informal drop-in meditation classes are the ideal way to learn how to meditate. You can discover Buddhist approaches to the challenges of life and practice training the mind in a supportive and casual environment.

Each week we hear one of Buddha’s teachings and relate it to modern life. There is no need to attend every class in a set of teachings, just come to the classes you can make. You don’t have to book, just turn up on the night. The classes start at 7.30pm and finish about 9pm. We recommend coming 10 minutes early so you can be settled and still when the class starts.
The facility fee is $12. Classes consist of guided meditations, teaching and discussion, followed by refreshments.

Meditation Day Courses give us a chance to explore Buddha’s teachings more than we can in an evening meditation class. By taking the time to contemplate and meditate, the teachings come alive for us in a practical and direct way.

The meditation day courses are designed to explore one of Buddha's teachings and explain how they are relevant for us today. We have the opportunity to hear profound teachings and then meditate on them so the meaning can go in deeply.

Courses start at 10am and finish at 4pm. There are breaks mid-morning and mid-afternoon, and an hour for lunch. Feel free to bring a plate and join us for a shared meal!

The facility fee is $35 for advance bookings or $40 on the day.

Meditation for Today

Meditation for Today was established in 1993 by Philippa (then Pip) Ransome, when Venerable Ayya Khema (1923-1997) asked her to teach meditation and the Dhamma. Ayya Khema, one of the great mystics of the twentieth century, is remembered for the clarity of her teachings and especially her understanding of the meditative absorptions. Philippa is one of only 6 teachers in Australia authorised by Ayya to pass on the Buddha’s teachings and Meditation for Today is dedicated to this purpose.

Retreats range from 1 to 10 days in length to meet the needs of beginning meditators and those already practicing towards stream entry. Unless otherwise stated all retreats are offered at Nyora Forest Retreat situated in the beautiful Yarra Valley an hours drive from Melbourne.

The teaching is pure, simple, joyful and speaks to the heart.
May you be well and happy!
