6pm on Tuesday 12th October:
Martine Batchelor introduces "Spirit of the Buddha"

The Spirit of the Buddha introduces the life and teachings of the Buddha in a contemporary manner, explores the development of the tradition up to the present day, and shows how different schools of Buddhism have remained true to or departed from the original teachings. The aim of The Spirit of the Buddha is to introduce the life and fundamental teachings of the Buddha in an accurate and contemporary manner for a general but knowledgeable public. The book also considers the development of the tradition up to the present day, thus showing how different schools of Buddhism have remained true to and departed from the original teachings. The book is based on original scriptures from the Pali Canon, understood in the light of the most recent scholarship, while being practical and accessible throughout. It explores essential Buddhist ideas in a modern context, thereby making the Buddha's teachings relevant for our times.

MARTINE BATCHELOR lived in Korea as a Zen nun under the guidance of Master Kusan for ten years. She is the author of Meditation for Life , The Path of Compassion , Women in Korean Zen and Let Go: A Buddhist Guide to Breaking Free of Habits . She is a member of the Gaia House Teacher Council. She teaches meditation retreats worldwide and lives in France. Her latest work is The Spirit of the Buddha.

DANCING THE SPIRAL THE TARA DANCE RETREAT

Imagine yourself at your best! All of the qualities and roles you have within you at their finest! This is what the 21 Praises of Tara Mandala Dance is enacting, unfolding like a lotus revealing its inner beauty. This dance unveils the many faces of the lady Buddha Tara, the swift protectoress who liberates us from fears; the great Mother who is there for all her children without exception. She is compassion in action and the 21 praises are her enlightened qualities that skillfully serve the world.

In this weekend, you are led into a study of the Buddhist path through the medium of a sacred Mandala of dance. You will experience the subtlety of sacred movement and mudra. Together we learn experientially through visualisation and prayer, the foundation of the traditional Buddhist practices of Tara, the Green Lady Buddha and her twenty one manifestations.

This Sacred Dance is a meditation in motion where we combine body, speech and mind to manifest our highest potential.

His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama “With your motivation of compassion, this dance in the name of Tara brings a great blessing. Wonderful!! Very, very fine!!’

Retreat Leader ¬ Felicity Oswell
Felicity is a teacher of many things, from Art, Sewing and Meditation to Community Welfare and contempory middle eastern dance. A long time student of Buddhism, Felicity is one of the few students empowered to teach this dance publicly and leads the Sydney Tara Dhatu Dance group in Sydney at monthly dance meetings, offerings to Lamas and charitable fund-raising events.

Buddhayana Forest Retreat is a Buddhist Meditation Retreat Center

Situated amongst a beautiful mixed hardwood forest of Nova Scotia's Cobequid Highlands.

Buddhayana Forest Retreat offers temporary, monastic style meditation retreats, in the Buddhist ascetic forest tradition of Shakyamuni Buddha; Thai forest monks; Tibetan mountain yogi; Zen and Taoist hermits;
and others who have retreated to the quiet and solace of nature. To engage in a sincere and disciplined practice of meditation.

"The forest tradition offers nothing
and asks for nothing in return ..."

Buddhayana Forest Retreat is currently in its final phase of construction. To date, we have raised sixteen retreat cabins and a meditation hall. We anticipate finishing up the outfitting of the cabins during summer 2009 and our first 'Three Month Summer Retreat' is scheduled for next summer, 2010!

Buddhayana Forest Retreat's vision will have retreatants gathering to sit group meditation in the Hall each morning, then retiring to their cabins for solitary practice the remainder of the day. They will also strictly observe the first Ten Buddhist Precepts.

The housekeeping cabins are simple, rustic and comfy, while the forest setting is quiet and inspiring. Retreatants will cook and generally fend for themselves, and should expect to be self directed and motivated,
in their practice and in their personal upkeep.

"Seek out your own salvation with diligence !"
the Buddha

Beginners are welcome and instruction can be offered, however please let us know if you would like instruction either beforehand or when you arrive.

INTRODUCTORY CLASS
Tuesday evenings: 6:30-8.00 pm led by Miffi Maxmillion & Brian Phillips
This introductory class is ideal for first time students new to meditation or to Buddhism. It includes a short guided meditation, a talk, readings and the opportunity for questions. Each class has a practical element where we learn how to sit comfortably, how to prostrate, how to make offerings or to set up an altar. We also go through some of the key elements of Buddhist teaching, at the pace of the class, and with plenty time for questions. We try to keep the classes relatively small to encourage in-depth discussion. Suggested donation: $5

DISCOVERING BUDDHISM
Wednesday evenings: 6:30-8:00 pm led by Eddie Peet
This is an in-depth beginner's class in Buddhist philosophy and practice, aiming to give participants a solid footing in the practice of Mahayana Buddhism. They also give us an experiential taste of the Buddha's teachings, meditation retreat experience, and the skills we need to make our lives most meaningful. You can officially join up for one subject, for some, or for all of them, and receive the notes, readings and assessment. Or you can come on an informal basis and just sit in on the class. This estimated two year course has a total of 14 subject areas. Each subject includes 6-10 weeks of classes, a one day retreat, and concludes with a half hour interview with Eddie. Topics for 2004 are “Samsara and Nirvana”, “How to Develop Bodhicitta” and “Transforming Problems”. Suggested donation: $5

INTERMEDIATE STUDY GROUP
Thursday evenings: 6:30-8:00 pm led by Eddie Peet
This intermediate class makes an in-depth study and review of Geshe-la's Friday night teachings from the previous week. We use the transcripts from Geshe-la's previous teaching as a study guide. The class includes meditation, supplementary readings and lots of discussion. Suggested donation: $5

TEACHINGS WITH GESHE TASHI TSERING
Friday evenings: 7:30-9:00 pm (please check calendar to confirm dates)
Teachings from The Way of the Bodhisattva, advice on how to make every day of this life both compassionate and meaningful. Bodhicitta is the wish to become enlightened so as to be able to free all living beings from suffering and place them in a state of ultimate happiness. By developing this wish our whole life changes. Everything we do becomes meaningful. Geshe-la gives us supremely practical advice on how to follow these methods so as to be able to change our mind, and thus our life, for the better. Suitable for both beginners and more experienced students. Geshe-la teaches through a translator, which gives us time to contemplate the teachings in nice bit-size chunks. Suggested donation: $5

Buddhist Study groups in Brisbane

Generally it is difficult to fully understand and apply the Buddhist teachings by merely reading books. Further if we attend regular teachings and courses it is difficult to maintain the enthusiasm for study and contemplation once we have left a teaching and it is difficult. Our lives are busy with work and family commitments and when confronted with problems it is sometimes difficult to keep our mind on the Buddhadharma. These study groups are intended to provide a supportive environment for students to develop enthusiasm, strength and joy for the exploration and application of Buddhism in their daily lives. The Buddhist Study Group follows the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition and is associated with Chenrezig Institute- Eudlo Queensland and Geshe Tashi Tsering (a fully qualified Lharampa Geshe in the Gelugpa tradition) who is the resident Lama at Chenrezig Institute.
Beginner-intermediate level study group meets fortnightly at Holland Park to study the Three Principal Aspects of the Path by Tsong Khapa.
Beginner level group meets fortnightly at Manly to study the basic principals of Buddhism such as karma, nature of mind, four noble truths etc.
Each group meets on Saturday morning 9-12.30 am and includes presentations, discussion, meditations and homework. Small fee only to cover costs.

STUDIES FOR ENLIGHTENMENT- module 1
Geshe Tashi Tsering , the resident Lama at Chenrezig Institute has given his consent for us to trail a new and exciting study programme planned to start in Brisbane in March 2004. This course will be based on his teachings on Mind and Cognition to be given in March/April 2004 at CI as part of the Buddhist Study Programme (BSP).
The Mind and Cognition course is a fascinating exploration into model of the mind as presented in the Buddhist tradition. This journey provides an excellent interface to the western views on mind and psychology. By better understanding this model we can more clearly understand our basic drives which lead us to being entrapped within samsara and how to liberate ourselves from it. In addition to gaining a greater understanding of the workings of the mind it also helps to develop a greater faith in the Buddhist teachings and a greater respect for the intelligence and compassion of the Buddha.
The Programme will run over 8-10 weeks and will be facilitated by full time Buddhist Study Programme (BSP) students Jeannette Weyers and Alan Carter.

The course is intended for people who cannot attend the BSP at Chenrezig Institute and are willing to commit 10 hrs per week which includes :
listening to tapes (4.5hrs)
self study (1.5hrs)
complete homework (1hr)
attend weekly discussions (3hrs).

Course material will include tapes from Geshe La's teachings, transcripts, course handouts and homework. Expected Cost is $200.

Buddhism teaches that every human being has the potential to become happier, kinder, wiser - even infinitely so.  The Buddha was a human being who, through his own efforts, realised the path the Enlightenment.   Rooted in awareness that all things are impermanent, constantly subject to change, the Buddhist teachings are a means whereby, through effort, we too can reach our full potential.
